The success of disaster recovery and rescue operations depends largely on effective communication between rescue teams (RT) and victims. Unfortunately, certain disasters go beyond crippling/impairing communication infrastructures as it equally cripples power grids, which make it impossible for survivors to recharge mobile communication devices. On the other hand, proactive Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) tend not to scale well in dense networks, thus the number of victims that can connect to the network may not represent the totality of victims in the disaster zone. Therefore, this paper examines MANET's popular Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol by identifying current energy and overhead challenges and proffering a new pragmatic energy and overhead friendly OLSR protocol called Disaster Scenario Optimized Link State Routing Protocol (DS-OLSR).
