Fingertips detection is one of the important stages for applications such as gesture recognition and hand tracking. In this paper, it proposes a new method to extract hand region and consequently the fingertips from color images. The technique is based on free-form color model for hand segmentation followed by smoothing and thinning algorithm for fingertips detection. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been evaluated by experimenting with images of different background complexity and have achieved very encouraging results.
