Positron Emission Tomography is widely used in three dimensional imaging of metabolic body function and in tumor detection. Important research efforts are made to improve this imaging modality and powerful simulators such as GATE are used to test and develop methods for this purpose. PET requires acquisition time in the order of few minutes. Therefore, because of the natural patient movements such as respiration, the image quality can be adversely affected which drives scientists to develop motion compensation methods to improve the image quality. The goal of this study is to evaluate various image reconstructions methods with GATE simulation of a PET acquisition of the torso area. Obtained results show the need to compensate natural respiratory movements in order to obtain an image with similar quality as the reference image.
