Method
The methodology of this study is unique in that simulated candi-dates (SCs) were introduced into the actual admission interview process to collect the required data. That is, to determine whether interviewers can reliably and validly measure desired noncognitive qualities of medical school candidates, actors were trained to portray real applicants of varying ability levels. lnterview Procedure. Each year, the University of Calgary accepts 69 students into its first-year class. To select the best available candidates, approximately 200 of 800 applicants are invited for interviews on the basis of a two-person evaluation of six preadmission areas: academic results, MCAT scores, letters of reference, extracur-ricular activities, employment history, and a written essay.
