简介
In the last years European Commission has invested large funds to support creation of remotely available Information and Communication Technologies experimentation facilities which have provided an unprecedented contribution to the research community. Moreover, many high-end facilities have been made available to researchers, Small and Medium Enterprises and research institutions all over Europe and US. However, the existing testbed infrastructures still keep on lacking some key characteristics, such as large-scale network deployment, possibility of modifying practically all the protocol layers, access to commercial networks as they are, and access to regulated spectrum. The EuWireless project, funded by the European Commission, attempts to solve these issues by establishing a pan-European mobile network operator for research. In this article we aim at presenting the project to the Polish research community, and describe the challenges that still need to be overcome in order to include mobile Radio Access Networks into the wired Geant Testbed Services, which has been chosen by EuWireless project, funded by the European Commission, consortium as a testbed infrastructure implementation. We first discuss the management of radio resources in the context of regulated spectrum sharing framework. We propose the Software defined networks approach with an SD-RAN controller and a modified spectrum sharing framework with the spectrum manager. Second, we discuss the challenges related to the virtualization of RAN resources which is necessary to include them in the Geant Testbed Services.
