In this paper, we propose an effective light trapping mechanism through engineering a silver grating to significantly increase the photocatalytic activity of a TiO2-based system. The presented structure contains an asymmetric ultra-thin multilayer silver stripe. Optical properties of the structure are numerically simulated with the rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) method. Two different symmetric and asymmetric designs are investigated. It is shown that several absorption peaks will appear in the absorption spectrum of the symmetric and asymmetric systems, which are attributed to the excitation of localized SP modes at the silver–TiO2 interface. Moreover, the effects of the incident angle of the sunlight and the geometrical parameters of the asymmetric design are studied to achieve an optimum configuration.
