This paper describes the calibration requirements for polarisation state analysers used to measure polarisation mode dispersion (PMD). The technique used at NPL to implement the calibration, and to ensure traceability to national standards, is outlined. The uncertainty limit on the measurement of PMD due to the calibration uncertainty of the polarisation state analyser will be described.
