The continuous deterioration of energy resources and environment as well as the requirement to improve systems’ efficiencies leads to the significant demands on hybridisation/electrification of industrial systems/machines. Hybridisation on marine vessels traditionally using diesel generators has been then recognized as one of the major targets for this evolution. This paper therefore aims to develop a simple but efficient energy management strategy (EMS) for hybrid electric dynamic positioning vessels (HEDPVs) to optimally distribute the energy flows between its power sources, including generators and energy storages (batteries and/or super-capacitors). This EMS is built based on equivalent fuel consumption minimization (EFCM) concept and simple rule-based logics considering a number of system factors, such as load demands, propulsion components’ dynamics and performances.
