The concept of smart grid is built on both electrical and two-way information flow, which is intended to facilitate efficient usage of energy for the future. However, cyber security and information privacy issues have raised concerns as potential loopholes since large-scale communication networks will be needed to connect numerous devices from geographically dispersed sites to a control centre. Leakage or manipulation of sensitive operational data in a smart grid may result in serious financial losses as well as power system contingencies. Hence, for the interdependencies between the electric power infrastructure and networked computers, defence of the cyber network in a smart grid must be strengthened in order to avoid catastrophes that can be caused by electronic intrusions.
