Unsaturated water transmission parameters, viz, soil water diffusivity (D), weighted mean diffusivity (D), penetrability ( lambda ) and sorptivity (S) in relation to water quality were evaluated for a clay loam and sandy loam soil. A straight line relationship, though with a small negative intercept, was obtained between distance of wetting front and square root of time for all the treatment combinations in both soils. In general, D, D, lambda and S, increased with increasing electrolyte concentration (C) and decreasing SAR. D increased with an increasing moisture content. The effect of SAR and C on D was more pronounced near saturation moisture content. Relationships were drawn between relative soil water diffusivity and SAR to evaluate the relative hazardous effect of SAR at different moisture contents.
