Information technology outsourcing continues to be an important industry and research topic. Besides the client-vendor relationship, advisory services have been identified as a key driver for successful ITO engagements. We investigate what activities and roles thirdparty advisory services take in ITO relationships, and how these roles do change over time. We conduct an exploratory, longitudinal case study of an ITO project with a triangular setup–client, vendor, and advisor. The analysis of the findings results in a preliminary process model with different roles and activities of the advisor. We identified problems and challenges as well as related mitigation measures from the client and especially from the advisor within the project. We evaluate if and how the third-party advisory has a positive respectively negative effect on the relationship between the client and vendor organization as well as on the outcomes of the ITO project.
