In German newspapers, the term ‘gentrification’was explained for years as a foreign-language technical term with the addition ‘sociologists call the process…’. Now long-established in the linguistic mainstream, the question still arises as to what sociologists actually mean by the buzz word ‘gentrification’, as it is not clear since German journalists associate gentrification with a field of sociological research.

In fact, in the almost 60 years since Ruth Glass first used the term, research on gentrification has established itself in many academic fields and has become an interdisciplinary research topic: geographers analyze the spatial processes of gentrification and displacement; economists examine the influence of land rents and management practices on real estate markets; cultural scholars direct their research towards questions of symbolic gentrification, cultural use, and the changing representation of urban spaces …
