Sally White, John Manley, Richard Jones, John Orna-Ornstein, Catherine Johns and Leslie Webster write: The hoard of gold and silver discovered at Patching (West Sussex) in April 1997 includes twenty-three Roman or pseudo-Roman gold solidi and twenty-seven Roman or pseudo-Roman silver coins, together with silver bullion and two gold rings (PL. XXVA). Numismatic evidence suggests that the hoard was assembled from two or more sources, at least one British and one Continental, and was buried c. AD 465. Apart from a late Republican denarius, the silver and gold coins together span a date range from c. AD 333 to AD 461. Most of the hoard was recovered by two metal-detectorists, Messrs Bromley and Silver, in April 1997.
