Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus [GAS]) is responsible for millions of infections and more than 500 000 deaths worldwide annually [1]. Generally, the primary site of GAS is the oropharynx with pharyngotonsillitis and scarlet fever as its most common suppurative manifestations, possibly complicated by nonsuppurative autoimmune sequelae. However, an increase in invasive GAS (iGAS) infections with detectable bacteraemia has been reported throughout Europe since late 2022 [2]. Even if less frequent than Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus [GBS]) and Escherichia coli, GAS can occasionally colonize the female genital tract and cause serious complications including puerperal sepsis and early-onset neonatal sepsis [3].
