Background: Multiple studies have demonstrated an inverse correlation between the genetic architectures of cognition and schizophrenia (Rg∼. 20), and a positive genetic correlation between education and cognition (Rg∼. 70). Paradoxically, however, a modest (though consistent) positive association between schizophrenia and educational has also been reported. Here, we leverage prior results of multiple GWASs on cognition, education, and schizophrenia to investigate this phenomenon, in an attempt to parse biological mechanisms that might shed light on the etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia.
Methods: GWAS summary statistics for cognition (N= 107,207), education (N= 328.917), and schizophrenia (N= 77,096) were meta-analyzed using a technique known as Analysis based on SubSets (ASSET), which allows pleiotropic signals across the entire genome to be pooled using a two-tailed z-test approach …
