Vehicular ad hoc networks are expected to support a large spectrum of applications in the field of intelligent transportation systems. It is an emerging and boosting field to provide wireless communication among vehicles. VANET has some unique and special characteristics compared with traditional mobile ad hoc networks such as self-organization, high mobility, dynamic and frequent changing topologies. Traditional routing protocols have been suffered to deal with these characteristics in terms of data delivery, network overhead. In order to overcome these issues, there is a need for efficient routing protocols to deal with route break, disconnectivity and data delay issues in the network. Various different types of protocols have been proposed for vehicular ad hoc networks but still they have some limitations and routing issues in the network. In this review, we examined the recent and well-known routing protocols for VANET, their types, functions with different issues and challenges in the network.
