A medical interventional device adapted to be implanted in the body of a patient provides a plurality of cardiac thera peutic functions including bradycardia pacing, rate adaptive pacing, antitachycardia pacing, cardioversion and defibril lation on demand. An accelerometer in or associated with the device senses accelerational and gravitational effects indica tive of at least one of position, posture and physical activity of the patient, and generates an electrical signal representa tive of the position, posture and physical activity of the patient of which the sensed effect is representative. The accelerometer acts as a transducer to convert mechanical movement to an electrical output representative of such movement.
