In healthcare, the distribution of smartphones and tablet PCs running operation systems like Apple iOS or Android, attracts the interest in many application fields. In this paper we present insights into the development process of a Google Android-based tablet PC system, designed for in-hospital glucose management treatment of acute ill patients with type 2 diabetes. The system provides decision support for insulin dosing and falls within the scope of the Medical Device directive for software which came into effect in March 2010. In order to support usability and fulfill the design requirements, according to IEC 62366 standard, we included physicians and nurses in the design process to implement a modular user interface based on established clinical workflows using mockups and functional prototypes.
