In 3 zero-delay matching-to-sample experiments, 3 Silver King pigeons' performance on element samples (color or angular orientation) was compared with their performance on 4 different compound samples in which color and angular orientation were combined. In Exp I, Ss matched element and compound samples to element tests, which for compound samples varied randomly between the 2 colors and the 2 angular orientations. In Exp II, test stimuli were symbolic and the elements of compound stimuli were presented such that both elements always matched the same test. All Ss showed uniformly high matching accuracy on all sample types. Exp III replicated Exp I except that sample duration was systematically varied.
