The Soil Thematic Strategy of EU is seeking to (i) establish common principles for the protection and sustainable use of soils, (ii) prevent threats to soils, and mitigate the affects of those threats; (iii) preserve soil functions within the context of sustainable use; and (iv) restore degraded and contaminated soils to approved levels of functionality. Land use policy should build on the agreed principles of European environmental and health policies and the principles of sustainable development and should be developed with transparent and inclusive approaches to assessments, planning and decision-making.
