The numerical analysis of masonry arch bridges requires detailed information about the geometry and mechanical properties of all the bridge components. As for the geometry, masonry bridges present complex shapes, being the characterization of the inner geometry (e.g. arch thickness or presence of backing) still a relevant challenge. As for mechanical properties, which are hardly measurable, they are essential for a reliable definition of the load carrying capacity. This paper presents a multidisciplinary approach based on the use of non-destructive testing techniques and describes critically its application to a medieval masonry arch bridge. The geometric characterization is based on a detailed laser scanning and ground penetrating radar survey, allowing determining the external and inner geometry of the bridge.
