Tribe (1992) provided a review of a number of methods for the automated delineation of valley lines and drainage networks from grid digital elevation models (DEM). Two fundamental problems were identified when using the overland flow simulation approach. These are: (1) positioning of the source nodes or upstream ends of the drainage network; (2) assignment of flow direction in flat and depressional areas of the DEM. The methodological improvements suggested to overcome these create a new set of problems which are discussed in this paper.
