For most people in the developed world, information and communication technologies (ICTs) have permeated nearly every aspect of everyday life, affecting where and how we work, learn, shop, eat, play, reside–and travel. The travel impacts are myriad and complex, including direct effects on decisions about a given trip, as well as the collateral effects on travel arising from ICT impacts on primary activities, on the supply of travel, on mediumterm decisions such as auto ownership, and on long-term lifestyle and location decisions. The goal of this chapter is to sketch the current state, and possible future directions, of knowledge with respect to the short-and mediumterm impacts of ICT on travel behavior/demand. We focus primarily on the “new” ICTs involving mobile telephony and the internet, but we also consider older technologies such as television and even print media to be ICTs.
