This book forum reports an outcome of the authors-meet-the-critics session organized for the 2016 American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting, which took place coincidentally but appropriately, in San Francisco. Divergent development has been an eternal theme of the first author of the book, Michael Storper, for as long as I have known him. Storper’s early books Production, Work, Territory (Scott and Storper 1986) and The Capitalist Imperative (Storper and Walker 1989) are now classics and they are must-read materials for students in economic geography. Thus, it is in some ways a surprise that he waited so long to write about divergent development of his pseudohome state, California. The book represents an in-depth treatment of California’s recent regional economy in a manner that has not been done comprehensively elsewhere.
