Since the recognition of SARS-CoV-2 virus in December 2019 there have been more than seventy-two million cases and greater than 1.6 million deaths globally, as well as more than 300,000 deaths in the United States attributable to COVID-19 [1]. COVID-19 has had a dramatic impact on modern global society and will be a major part of the collective global biosphere for the foreseeable future. Similar to the response to other modern-era infectious disease outbreaks (Human Immunodeficiency Virus, H1N1 Influenza, Ebola virus, and Zika virus) vaccination is a potent mitigation strategy being aggressively pursued against SARS-CoV-2.
