Introduction: Murine models of septic shock using cecal ligation and perforation have well-developed criteria for prediciting severity based upon parameters such as number of perforations of the cecum. Swine models are not as well characterized.
Hypothesis: We sought to refine a technique for rapid development of septic shock in several hours, with measurable changes in HR, MAP, SVR, and SvO2.
Methods: Five domestic swine weighing 50-60kg were anesthetized, intubated, and ventilated. Arterial and venous lines were placed via femoral cutdown, a Swan-Ganz catheter was placed into the pulmonary artery, and placements were confirmed by waveform. The abdomen was opened via midline incision, the cecum was identified, 2-3 vessels were ligated to create an ischemic insult, and the cecum was perforated with a one cm incision using electrocautery.
