简介
The premise of this volume is that there is a continuum of semiotic agents across biology, extending from the first individually competent cells to their colonial aggregations and then further becoming functioning tissue ecologies, multicellular eukaryotic organisms, and holobionic species. This same agency propels collective human thought and our organizations, including nations or political movements. Our contribution explains this causal chain by focusing on the conscious cell. In recent publications, we have argued and presented empirical evidence for sentience/cognition in all organisms, from unicellular prokaryotes to Homo sapiens . Put simply, life and sentience are coterminous. All living organisms, all biological entities, feel, learn, remember, choose, react, and communicate. All are biosemiotic agents.
