Background
Persons with a history of violent offending with and without comorbid psychosis show abnormalities in brain morphometry such as lower amygdala volumes and cortical volume reductions, but results are not consistent across studies. By concentrating on group" averages", case/control designs frequently obscure inter-individual variations.
Methods
We investigated inter-individual deviations of psychotic violent offenders (PSY-V, n= 38), non-psychotic violent offenders (NPV, n= 19) and non-violent psychosis patients (PSY-NV, n= 127) from lifetime normative trajectories of cortical thickness, surface area and subcortical volumes (ROI) based Freesurfer derived maps from data of 58,836 individuals (ages 2-100) from 82 different sites. Associations between brain deviations and psychosis symptom load (PANSS scores) and psychopathy traits (PCL-R scores) were investigated.
