Over-centralisation of decision making and inadequate stakeholder’s involvement are significant problems in developing countries which led to patronage of powerful special interests and high level of corruption in governmental systems. This has necessitated various Civil Society Organisations to take part in the development process of these countries particularly in the promotion of democracy and good governance and above all in contributing to greater transparency and accountability. This paper examines the role of civil society organizations in promoting democracy and good governance in Nigeria. This paper is in line with Dahl’s group equilibrium theory and uses secondary data to reveal that, in Nigeria, there is little or no restriction on the civil society to organize itself through the formation of non-governmental organizations or civil society organizations or coalitions.
