The connection between space and society is eternal but less investigated. Space represents the “environment” in an urban context, where social life occurs. Therefore, to understand social behavior, it is paramount to understand its interrelationship with the surrounding built environment. Understanding society by investigating space is comparatively new in urban studies. Modernism’s false and insensible standardization of human needs and denial of social needs of urban spaces were the catalysts to instigate the urge to have a social perspective in urban planning and design.
