The energy efficiency of information and communication technology becomes more and more important due to the raise of energy costs and the world wide desire to reduce CO₂ emissions. Data centers have been in the focus concerning their energy efficiency lately, however, also office hosts that are located outside of data centres consume huge amounts of energy (e.g., in public administration or companies). Such office environments promise a high potential in terms of energy savings -- a significant number of hosts remains to be turned on 24 hours per day while being mostly underutilized. This paper investigates the energy consumption in office environments and discusses the potential of energy savings.
