Describes the clinical implications of% ADHD% in parents for assessment and treatment of their children. ADHD in parents may have an impact on their reaction to ADHD symptoms in their children. ADHD symptoms can be associated with both parenting deficits and parenting strengths. Parents may complain of difficulty maintaining their attention during supervision of children. Parents who have difficulty with mood lability or dysphoria may find it hard to soothe a child who is having a tantrum because they react to the tantrum, escalating the situation rather than disengaging. Parents with ADHD may have difficulty following through with a treatment program due to difficulties with following instructions and listening. On the other hand, a child who observes a parent who has insight into his or her own symptoms of ADHD may be reassured of the therapeutic vs punitive nature of the therapy situation. A child who …
