Review of the literature will indicate that the subject of governance in institutions of higher education is one of both contemporary interest and relevance. This study sought to explore the perceptions regarding the roles of the presidency that were held by three sets of position incumbents: presidents, academic deans, and governing board chairpersons. It was inspired by review of the work of Lawrence S. Cote who previously had conducted a study of presidential roles in colleges and universities within Pennsylvania. He examined twenty roles and surveyed both presidents and governing board chairpersons.
