One of the most consistent findings throughout youth violence research and literature is that males are more heavily involved in serious forms of violence than females. According to official charge statistics, males are far more likely to be involved in both serious (homicide, assault causing bodily harm, aggravated assault) and minor (Level 1 assaults, intimidation) forms of violence during adolescence (Dell & Boe, 1998; Duffy, 1996; Totten, 2000; US Department of Health and Human Services, 2001). This relationship has held true across time (Corrado, Cohen & Odgers, 2000; Rowe, Vazsonyi, & Flannery, 1995) and across cultures (Budnick & Shields-Fletcher, 1998; Department of Justice Canada, 1998; Tanner, 1996).
