Metamaterials have been shown to be a promising tool for exotic wave manipulation for the terahertz frequency range. Within this range, conventional materials have weak interactions with electromagnetic waves, thus limiting the device optimization in terms of performance and size. Metamaterials enable engineering of the host material to enhance the device performance. This chapter focuses on the recent development of metasurfaces and metawaveguides for an underutilized section of the electromagnetic spectrum, the terahertz region. After a succinct introduction to terahertz spectrum and meta-atoms, the chapter focuses on metasurfaces and related achievable functionalities including amplitude, phase, and polarization control.
