The history of this edited volume goes back to February 2013 when the idea for this book first emerged during a coffee break at Umeå University in Sweden when we realised that little was known about recent changes in socio-economic segregation in European cities. Although many have claimed that segregation is increasing, there was no recent international comparative and systematic research available on segregation. In March 2013 many of the authors of the chapters in this book came to the University of Tartu in Estonia for the conference Mobility, Segregation, and Neighbourhood Change and agreed to contribute to this book project. The resulting volume contributes to the literature on residential segregation in Europe in three ways.
