Buddhist organizations in Taiwan, for the most part, remained silent during the period of martial law (1947-1987), and have not been involved during the process of democratization in the 1990s. The indifference of Buddhist organizations in Taiwan to the process of democratization in the 1980s and the 1990s can be explained by the obedience of members to leaders committed to a conservative version of the modern theology of" this-worldly Buddhism."
