The important Albian to Campanian global sea level rise (Vail et al., 1977; Hancock and Kauffman 1979), associated with downwarping of the Atlantic and Tethyan margins, was responsible for flooding a large part of the Spanish Central Plateau (Alonso et al., 1982; Vilas et al., 1983). The newly created epeiric platform allowed the joining of two different domains: the Atlantic in the north and the Tethys in the south. The influence of one on the other through the Late Cretaceous can be elucidated by examining the facies distribution and sedimentary evolution of the platform.
