comparative publication “underperformance” by female physicians, when compared to male peers, can explain the persistent gender inequity in academic medicine leadership. We applaud the authors for this contribution to the literature. Through a retrospective review of first and last authorship of original research in United States-based academic medical and surgical journals from 2000-2017, the authors found that publication rates for women increased over time and were proportional to their representation in academic medicine. They also did not find a difference in journal impact factor for male and female first and last authors. As the authors rightly emphasize, this has not translated into more women in academic leadership positions.
