简介
The skyrocketing cost of textbooks can prevent students from purchasing assigned materials and registering for certain classes (Senack 2014; Mulhere 2015). Open textbooks (which are free with easy, online access) can mitigate these problems. At Brigham Young University (BYU), Kurt Sandholtz (assistant professor and director of management communication) and Lisa Thomas (adjunct instructor and assistant director) assembled a team of adjunct instructors to create an open textbook for the Marriott School’s required business communication class. The project’s seven phases (raising funds, planning the book, drafting the chapters, reviewing the drafts, creating support material, graphically designing the chapters, and maintaining the textbook) will be described, as well as the problems encountered and the solutions found during the long process to final production. This open textbook entitled Management Communication will be available to the public in the fall of 2017.
