This paper will describe a new project at KTH concerning road network vulnerability, as well as present some early results. The aim of the project is to develop the methodology of vulnerability analysis for road networks and to illustrate how this methodology can be used for generating a basis for the decision-making process concerning alternative actions related to investments, operations and maintenance of the road network. The methods that will be developed will make it possible to evaluate systematically all links in very large networks and to rank them on the basis of their importance for personal and goods transports. It will then be possible to identify the most important links for each road region. It will also be possible to identify the municipalities in each road region that are particularly exposed. In order to visualise the importance of links and the exposure of regions, and to handle different kinds of vulnerability scenarios (storms, floods etc.), a GIS-based tool will be developed.
