In this preface, we provide a brief history of Simulating Knowledge Dynamics in Innovation Networks, best known as the “SKIN model”. It all started with the joint conference of the Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S) and the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST) in 1996, which took place at the University of Bielefeld in Germany under the title “Signatures of Knowledge Societies” and was organised by the Institute of Science and Technology Studies (IWT). At this conference, Petra Ahrweiler, as a young postdoc, had organised two sessions on “Modelling Science” and had invited Nigel Gilbert, the best-known expert in this field, as keynote speaker. Several young scholars were speakers at these sessions, among them Koen Frenken and Paul Windrum.
