The paper by Lucy Suchman provides a sharp critique of a certain approach towards the understanding of human communication and cooperation, namely speech act theory, and its instantiation within specific forms of information technology. She pays particular attention to the well known work of Flores and Winograd on The Coordinator that has already created much discussion within the CSCW community. In an effort to stimulate discussion and argumentation on the issues raised by Suchman, the Journal invited Terry Winograd to respond to the article in a companion piece in the Journal. This he consented to do, and we are very pleased to be able to present his response alongside the original Suchman article. Because we believe that the issues raised by both authors are of such central importance to the CSCW field, and that extended discussion of them within the pages of this Journal would be worthwhile …
