Marc Rhoads Background: When newborn mice are subjected to acute maternal separation stress, cowmilk based formula feeding, and brief recurrent hypoxia with cold stress, they develop gut inflammation characteristic of necrotizing enterocolitis, with an increase in gut mucosal effector T (Teff) and reduced regulatory T (Treg) cells. The imbalance can be prevented by Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 (LR). We hypothesized that LR could potentiate the tolerogenic function of Tregs.
