The topic of identifying objects that stand out from the norm in a data set is an exciting one in the field of data mining. Detecting such objects, known as outliers, is important for many applications such as fraud detection, network analysis, etc. Given the significance of outlier detection in real life scenarios, we chose to focus on this challenging research topic in this book. Contents of this book are mainly derived from the research work carried out towards Ph. D. thesis of the first author at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, under the supervision of the co-authors. The book itself is the outcome of the recommendation made by Prof. Lakhmi C. Jain, University of Canberra, suggesting us to produce a monograph based on our understanding of this research area.
