Ethernet is going to play a major role in automotive communications, thus representing a significant paradigm shift in automotive networking. Ethernet technology will allow for multiple in-vehicle systems (such as, multimedia/infotainment, camera-based advanced driver assistance and on-board diagnostics) to simultaneously access information over a single unshielded twisted pair cable. The leading technology for automotive applications is the IEEE Audio Video Bridging (AVB), which offers several advantages, such as open specification, multiple sources of electronic components, high bandwidth, the compliance with the challenging EMC/EMI automotive requirements, and significant savings on cabling costs, thickness and weight.
