Gender stratification research can be controversial, as evidenced in the 2005 debate stirred by former Harvard President Larry Summers’ career damaging comments about the underlying reasons for a lack of women in the math and science fields (eg, Valian 2005; MIT 2005). Either despite or because of this ongoing controversy, depending on one’s perspective, job based gender stratification must be examined to gain a better understanding of the continued under-representation of women in many technical fields. From the engineering perspective, there are fewer female electrical engineers the US labor force than males, with not much more than one in ten engineers as women as recently as 2001 (Fox 2006).
