Currently, the world is becoming increasingly urbanized, and the projected forecast reveals that more than 60% of the population will reside in the city by 2030. The cities and metropolitan areas are powerhouses of economic growth—contributing about 60% of global gross domestic product (GDP). However, they also account for about 70% of global carbon emissions and over 60% of resource use. Thus, rapid urbanization results in a growing number of slum dwellers, inadequate and overburdened infrastructure and services, worsening air pollution, and unplanned urban extension. Urbanization can threaten the quality of life, but cities also provide the testbeds needed to come up with related solutions. It will only be through the collective efforts of governments, private sector, and public—by harnessing transformative technologies—that we will be able to rebuild in ways that realize the true potential of cities.
