The deformation behavior of hexagonal metals is known to be strongly affected by a material texture. This paper aims at understanding the effect of a basal texture on the deformation-induced surface roughness in α-titanium. The effect of the basal texture severity on the deformation behavior is estimated for polycrystals characterized by the same grain geometry and different crystallographic orientations. For this purpose, three-dimensional polycrystalline models with the grain morphology and crystallographic orientations integrated explicitly are constructed using the step-by-step packing method. The texture severity is shown to strongly affect mesoscale roughness patterns. A more pronounced basal texture leads to suppression of the microscale surface roughness formed by displacements of individual grains perpendicular to the free surface (the orange peel pattern) and mesoscopic surface roughness formed by …
