The effects of Al on microstructure and mechanical properties of AlxCoCrFeNi (x=0.1, 0.75 and 1.5) high-entropy alloys were systematically studied by using various characterization methods. It was found that the crystalline structure of AlxCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy varies markedly with Al content, which changes from the initial single face-centered cubic (fcc) to fcc plus ordered body-centered cubic (bcc) structure (B2) and then to a duplex bcc structure (A2+B2) as the Al content is increased. The chemical composition analysis reveals that Al primarily partitions to B2 phase, suggesting Al is a stabilizer of B2 structure. With increasing Al content, more Ni and Al partition to the B2 phase due to the very negative mixing enthalpy of Ni and Al, and another phase enriched in Cr and Fe transforms from fcc to disordered bcc.
